LAME!
They have 2 kinds of bloody mary's.
1. their standard bloody mary. LAME! I give it a 2.
Strength - 2
Spice - 4
Salt - 3
Garnish - 5 - the bright spot
Originality - 3
ok, it's not a 2, i give it a 4
2. Their Bloody Martini is better, basically because it actually has some vodka in it.
Up the strength to 6, which raises the overall score to 5

History of the Bloody Mary
Ever wonder about the origins of the Bloody Mary? Nancy Ryan's short history has the answers.
Katz's
Whenever I go to a bar and I'm doing Bloody Mary research, I ask for 'The best bloody mary you know how to make".
At Katz's this produced a great response.
Don't get the cheapo drink pictured at the bottom of this page, make sure you get the top of the line, whatever they call it.
A tiny bottle of tabasco was included. Seemed original to me.
8 for spice
7 for garnish (I like celery - also)
3 for interesting rim salt
9 for originality
8 for strength
So I think they get a 7

Cedar Street Courtyard
My friend Rob runs Cedar Street Courtyard so I of course was obligated to try one of his bloody marys. They're good. I'd say a 7 out of 10 overall.
I think I need to come up with a multipoint scale.
1-10 for spice
1-10 for garnish
1-10 for interesting rim salt
1-10 for originality
1-10 for strength
For Cedar Street, I'd say it's spice-8, garnish-5, salt-1, originality-4, strength-9, which averages out to a 5.
Next we'll look at Katz's

Stickin it to the man!
I think Martha Stewart got screwed.
It was a case of overzealous little people stickin it to the man.
But that's just an aside. I like Martha because she pursues perfection, and that's a good thing.
What's this got to do with drinking Bloody Marys? Nothing. And Everything.
My wife and I are foodies. Austin is a good place to be such a person.
I never had a bloody mary in my life that didn't suck until I went to New Orleans to Commander's Palace. The one I had their knocked me out. It was perfection. So I bought their cookbook and proceeded to make my own in their style back home.
The problem is that it takes about 6 weeks to do so. Making your own hot sauce, worchestershire sauce, tomato juice, seasoned salt and garnishes from scratch takes a bit of time. Just the worchestershire sauce alone has about 15 ingredients.
When done, it is perfection, so Amanda and I redubbed it The Bloody Martha.
And it sent me on a quest. Where is the best bloody mary in Austin Texas? And can the bartender prepare it in less than 6 weeks?
